Developing a new carbon capture ready energy recovery facility is a team effort

The Tees Valley Authority plans to build a Carbon Capture Ready (CCR) Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) in Teesside, with a 450,000 tonne per annum capacity. The project will help the partnership of seven councils meet their ambitions of sending zero waste to landfill, while offering significant GHG savings. The authority engaged our team to provide professional services and serve as technical advisors for the procurement of the ERF.

The project represents a capital investment of up to £300 million, with a total value of approximately £2 billion across the initial 29 years. Stantec has been responsible for leading technical stakeholder engagement, developing the technical documents, providing technical and engineering input into dialogue meetings, and undertaking a technical evaluation of the tenders. In addition to assisting procurement, we provided planning and ground remediation support to the project.

We are also leading the development of CCR proposals as part of the BEIS Track 1 funding, including developing the initial funding application documentation and preliminary Front-End Engineering Design for the facility. The CCS technology will create the opportunity to reduce carbon emissions compared with landfills and for the TV ERF to actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, contributing to net-zero targets.
