Turning waste into energy at a former brick pit
For over a decade, we’ve been supporting our clients on the restoration and development of the Rookery Energy Park and its transformation from a 90-hectare former brick pit into a resource recovery facility (RRF) and home to an energy-from-waste (EfW) plant.
To help the site become an RRF, we provided support in various ways—planning, project management, and environmental impact assessment coordination as well as acoustic, ecology, and flooding surveys, civil and structural engineering, and stakeholder engagement for the low-level restoration scheme (LLRS) project. We also advised on the construction environmental management plan.
In 2016, we helped deliver Phase 1 of the LLRS, enabling construction of the Rookery EfW. To date, our expertise has been put to work regarding the base of the pit, winning new material from the southern enclave, and construction of a new surface water drainage project—including a new pond, pumps, and drainage ditches.
Recently, we have supported Watt Power Ltd. for a development consent order application for a gas peaking plan, which will be part of LLRS Phase 2. The Covanta Rookery South Energy Recovery Facility will be used to power 112,500 homes a year by 2022.
