Design for a proton therapy treatment center supports efficient care delivery, greater access, and improved patient experiences

Proton therapy is one of the latest high-tech treatment methods for cancer. We were pleased to play a role creating a new proton therapy facility for the University of Kansas Health System that will expand access to this valuable medical tool to more patients.

The new 48,000 square foot facility, an addition to the existing radiation oncology building, houses one IBA Proteus One proton therapy unit, with space to house another. The center provides pre-treatment spaces, recovery rooms for pediatric patients, and building support areas adjacent to the partially renovated radiation oncology department. As the architect of record and proton design architect for the project, we were proud to collaborate with Kansas-based architect Hoefer Welker for the design concept. The exterior design of the building uses terracotta panels in natural tones with subtle volumetric articulations. The overall architectural program presents a clean and contemporary design, reflecting the high-tech nature of its purpose.

To develop the design of the facility, we worked with partners and stakeholders, including members of the medical team, to define the needs of patients, families, and caregivers. We joined in a visioning session where we learned about the psychological, sociological, and physiological impacts of proton therapy. With this stakeholder feedback, the final design provides effective clinical workflow, a calming visual environment, and an improved patient experience.
