Helping the City of Sacramento redesign America’s largest infill brownfield site
The Sacramento Railyards district was established more than 150 years ago. For a century, it served as the western terminus of the American transcontinental rail line, a transportation network that helped shape the western world. But the district wasn’t just commodities and transportation—it was also key to manufacturing processes and labor.
In the 1990s, when Southern Pacific Transportation Company and Union Pacific merged, they shut down the Sacramento Railyards manufacturing processes, and the district became the country’s largest infill brownfield site. Which meant it had significant potential for redevelopment. And since then, our teams have worked on numerous projects within the region—from environmental restoration to geotechnical, civil, and structural engineering.
We’ve helped the City of Sacramento and Downtown Railyard Venture LLC add roads, bridges, tunnels, a train station, and water systems. The Sacramento Railyards will double the city’s central business district, effectively creating a 10 to 20 thousand resident town in the heart of Sacramento. With a stadium, hospital, arena, and mixed-use tower going in, the district will completely redefine the downtown core.
