Preserving, enhancing, and celebrating Reno’s outdoor recreation landscapes, events, programs, and activities
Nestled on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Reno is recognized as a world-wide leader in trails and recreation—from park paths to rugged wilderness trails. However, the City of Reno’s Parks and Recreation Department saw a dramatic reduction in its budget and staffing levels following the Great Recession of 2008. Continuous population growth, change in demographics, and new development patterns heightened the need for a more robust parks and recreation system. They reached out to our team to help.
We collaborated directly with City staff, stakeholders, and the community to analyze and assess the needs, location, and financial viability of all 78 of the parks and recreation facilities across 910 acres (368 hectares) of parkland. We worked to understand residents’ desires and goals and help them appreciate how park additions could improve their quality of life and encourage economic development.
The resulting master plan includes recommendations and priorities for the City’s parks, recreation facilities, open spaces, and trails over the next 20 years. The goal is to preserve, enhance, and celebrate the special outdoor recreation landscapes, events, programs, and activities that engage and enrich Reno and its community.
