Protected Bike Lanes in Rochester

Designing safer and smarter urban transportation corridors

  • Rochester, Minnesota

    Rochester, Minnesota

New bike lanes were added to 32 city blocks of existing roadway in downtown Rochester

The City of Rochester and Destination Medical Center, a 20-year economic development initiative, are getting Rochester ready for smart and significant growth. Mobility that reduces dependency on cars and improves active connections is one key to this growth strategy.

The City partnered with our team to help improve their growing network of bike lanes, specifically 32 blocks consisting of 3rd Avenue, 4th Avenue, and Center Street in downtown Rochester. These three thoroughfares carry the bulk of movement to Mayo Clinic buildings, several hotels, businesses, and residential properties in downtown Rochester. To move the project forward, our team reviewed past work and facilitated meetings with all stakeholders involved. The result was a safe, easy-to-use framework for pedestrians, riders, and drivers. New facilities were designed to established protected bike lane standards, with a focus on clarity for visiting drivers navigating an unfamiliar urban environment. The bike lanes utilize the existing roadway infrastructure to the greatest extent possible, minimizing costs and impacts to infrastructure. The design team also considered Minnesota’s harsh winter conditions and the need for snow removal.

Now complete, the new bike lanes will provide a safer environment for bicycle commuters and recreational users as well as local drivers and downtown visitors alike.
