Providing the opportunity to experience rare habitats up close in central Florida
Creating a wildlife habitat from a 175-acre parcel of abandoned farmland was no small task, but our ecologists helped Manatee County achieve that goal by creating upland, wetland, and intertidal wildlife habitats and replacing exotic invasive plants with plants native to coastal south Tampa Bay.
Encompassing habitats from coastal scrub to mangroves, the Perico Preserve Restoration included large-scale direct seeding to establish ground cover and planting of containerized trees and shrubs with over 100 plant species specified to return botanical diversity to this site.
Our ecologists solved challenges associated with this site by implementing an overall restoration of the property while accommodating constantly changing uses of the property including mitigation needs for offsite projects, volunteer planting of wetland creation areas, identifying a potential seagrass mitigation site, and maintaining high construction and implementation standards for the designed habitats. Now complete, Perico Preserve is a unique site where fish and wildlife thrive and residents of Manatee County have an opportunity to experience rare habitats up close. As community succession advances, an expected 25 tons of carbon will be captured from the atmosphere each year.
