Penn Medicine, Pennsylvania Hospital, Sleep Center Renovation

When Penn Medicine was looking to upgrade their facilities to provide state-of-the-art diagnostic services and treatment for the full range of sleep disorders, they looked to our team for help. Our job? To provide architecture and interior design services.

Our focus included a renovation that combined the existing sleep lab with the existing sleep practice into one functioning practice—creating a sleep and neurodiagnostics suite. This space includes six sleep study rooms with Murphy beds that can also be used as exam rooms. There are also two electromyography (EMG) rooms that double as sleep study rooms.

We researched circadian rhythm and the sleep cycle to help guide our design. Our goal was to emphasize and celebrate all the physical, emotional, and mental benefits of sleep, including boosting the immune system, improving memory function, and increasing productivity. A finish palette inspired by deep sleep—stages 3 and 4 of the sleep cycle, in which dreaming occurs—was chosen by the end users. The colors incorporate navy-blue accents, cooler, subdued tones, and design features that evoke the night sky.

We carefully selected the finishes applied within the patient bedrooms to help make the spaces feel more like home while meeting requirements for healthcare facilities. For example: millwork trim was added to disguise rigid sheet wall protection as wainscot, and an accent luxury vinyl tile pattern added an “area rug” to rooms that could not have carpet. We also worked with the historic commissioner’s office to specify new exterior windows for a few rooms in a style that fit the vernacular of the colonial-era hospital.

The result? An advanced and comprehensive new center that helps patients feel right at home during their overnight sleep study process.
