Developing a community’s vision for the future of an affordable, high-immigrant, mostly Hispanic community.
The dominant land use for both the North Shore and Channelview communities in Texas is residential with some commercial use located along major roadways. Acting as “bedroom” communities that provide workers for regional employers, they lack connectivity or a uniting identity. Opportunities for new development in the areas were limited, so we were brought in to work with local communities to develop plans that will best serve the residents and the growing population.
We worked with a task force of local stakeholders and community members to gain input through task force meetings, online forums, stakeholder interviews, and community visioning sessions. This is a diverse region with many people of Hispanic heritage. We used a highly inclusive engagement plan by creating an English and a Spanish website for the project, and we conducted meetings with live Spanish translations in Zoom meetings.
From these consultations, our study incorporates strategies to enhance mobility, connectivity, land use, housing, and economic development to create a livable place for all residents. Focusing on a holistic and community-oriented approach, we created an implementable plan which includes both a funding strategy and a capital improvement program. Ways to attract, retain or enhance retail, community facilities, parks, open spaces, and entertainment in Channelview will contribute to a vibrant community where people want to live, work, and play.
