Helping to guide traffic by developing a sign maintenance program for Newark Liberty Airport
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey traffic engineering team needed an inventory and retroreflectivity assessment of the signs at the Newark Airport. Our approach had to provide information on all facility signs and meet requirements from the 2009 Manual of Uniform Traffic Devices (MUTCD) so our client could develop their maintenance program.
We used an automated data collection vehicle to gather sign retroreflectivity and inventory data (image, GPS location, MUTCD code). Though about five percent of the signs required field assessment using digital cameras and a handheld retroreflectometer.
The complete inventory of data was processed and formatted into a geodatabase. That information can be uploaded to the asset management system, allowing direct access for traffic engineering staff at the Newark Liberty International facility, as well as traffic engineering staff at the central office.
The Newark operations team can access and update maintenance or replacement information, and the central office can analyze needs and budgetary requirements from the asset database, where they can look at remaining service life, number of annual replacements, and provide improved needs forecasting.
