New greenspace provides an essential sense of peace in the budding Channel District
Wanting to bring something special to the growing Channel District, the City of Tampa set their sights on transforming a brownfield site into a welcoming park. They engaged our team to provide comprehensive master planning, site restoration, urban design, landscape architecture, and hardscape design services to reimagine this downtown area into a greenspace oasis.
We incorporated residents’ preferences throughout the park design, creating a space that is fully accessible to pedestrians, cyclists, and those with limited mobility and offers a variety of ways to spend time outdoors. Recreational options include a play area with climbing blocks, two dog parks, a synthetic putting green, two shuffleboard courts, and pedestrian connections from Madison Street to Twiggs Avenue. There is also a mixed-use recreation court lined for paddle ball, pickleball, and volleyball with lighting for year-round use.
Designed with a modern industrial theme as a tribute to the area’s industrial past, the park features a 50-foot (15-metre) long glass art and terrazzo sitting wall created by a local artist. Additionally, a lawn event space and pavilion provide an open area for performances, movies, festivals, and more.
While just under an acre (0.4 hectares) in size, Madison Street Park offers community members of all ages and activity levels a place to enjoy the outdoors in a unique urban setting.
