Designing the first hospital in California to be awarded with LEED Silver certification
A Pebble Project®, designed to enhance dignity, privacy and community, this new place to live breaks its 750 bed scale down to small households that congregate into neighborhoods. Laguna Honda was the first hospital in California to be awarded LEED Silver certification.
Patient focused, family centered design. To provide smaller social groups within the 750 bed hospital, private and semi-private rooms are clustered together to form households of 15 residents, each consisting of resident rooms, a living room at one end and a dining room at the other end. A central building core consists of two nurse stations, activity room, spa rooms, learning room, food galley, and staff lounge. The skilled nursing facility includes units for chronic care, dementia, psycho-social, AIDS/HIV, rehabilitation, total care, hospice, and restorative care.
The design concept balances warmth, tradition, and history with invention, technology, and the future. As a centuries old landmark in San Francisco, it was important to respect the historical significance of the campus while accommodating the expansion and growth of the hospital’s mission and patient care into the 21st century.
