Aiding in remediation efforts
Hastings on Hudson, located in the lower reach of the Hudson River, has a history of industrial development dating back to the mid-1800s. A remediation effort was initiated, including dredging contaminated areas, sloped shoreline design, and extended bulkhead alignment. The problem? It’s a challenge to know if or how long it would take for the dredged areas to backfill naturally. The solution? Innovative models.
Our team developed and validated a hydrodynamic model for the entire Hudson River (LHR model) and a refined hydro and morphodynamic model (HOH model). The LHR model was used to capture hydrodynamics, while the HOH model was required to assess detailed water levels, currents, shear stress, and other factors along the project site for design alternatives. With the calibrated tools, we assessed hydro-dynamic responses and the corresponding long-term morphodynamic responses focusing on the pollutant removal areas by comparing erosion and sedimentation patterns under existing and proposed design conditions.
By leveraging two different models, our team of experienced engineers resolved problems under complex environmental conditions. We communicated recommendations resulting in safe and cost-effective operations, and our work was approved by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (NYDEC) for the environment/resilience assessment of the design during the permit application.
