Powering an improved and modern visitor experience

When it came time to replace their existing 1970s era arrival facility, the Port of Seattle wanted the new facility to provide a significant upgrade that welcomed visitors to the region with improved experiences and modern technologies. They engaged us as part of the progressive design-build team to provide electrical, lighting, technology, airport information systems, and audiovisual design services for this complex capital development project.

One of the key challenges this project faced was sufficient power generation. Working in conjunction with our design-build partner late in the construction documents phase, we needed to design 3.5 megawatts of new building generation to support the project. To mitigate delays at this stage, we defined a parallel design/procurement schedule, brought on an additional engineer onto the team dedicated to this scope, and developed multiple options to present to the Port of Seattle. The selected split generator plant option would provide the needed power generation without impacting the schedule or expanding the footprint of the building.

The completed facility provides travelers and staff with an experience that has enhanced technology for wayfinding, comfort, and security, all powered efficiently behind the scenes.
