We got down to the level of a four-year-old to design an ideally scaled school that is playful and inviting for children
To better support the needs of its Pre-K learning population, the Garland Independent School District was looking to develop a facility specifically designed for four-year-old students. Finding sites in the areas of greatest need was difficult, so the District identified land at two existing campuses to save on acquisition costs.
Our team was engaged to provide architecture, interior design, and structural engineering for the new Gloria Cisneros Pre-Kindergarten school. Using shape, color, and material, as well as Pre-K appropriate doors, windows, and furnishings, we made the design playful and not intimidating. Numbers, letters, and colors are used for wayfinding while natural light and durable, high quality materials were introduced to extend lifecycle costs and reduce maintenance. A large indoor playroom and adjacent covered patio takes the place of a gym, supporting supervised motor skill development despite weather conditions. The playground is wrapped by the building on three sides for added security and easy supervision.
Having our designer get down to the level of a four-year old helped establish the ideal scale for an environment that is inviting for children. The community now has a new facility for early childhood education in the areas within the district that needed it most.
