Cutting emissions across a school district portfolio
The Regina Public School (RPS) Board was looking to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across their district. They engaged our help to provide American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Level II energy audits, offer insight into operational and capital planning, and perform a vehicle fleet analysis supporting the transition toward electrical vehicles.
We analyzed the complete RPS portfolio of 44 elementary schools, eight high schools, and one administration building to determine priorities for operational improvement and cost value. While we used the results to shape a sustainability plan for the entire RPS portfolio, ten schools were selected as pilot sites for the study. Our team performed energy modeling and completed a benchmarking assessment. We identified energy conservation measures applicable to each pilot building. The sustainability plan highlights decarbonization approaches, future emissions reduction policies, strategies, renewable energy generation, and deep energy retrofits.
By implementing all feasible measures of the plan, RPS can reduce energy consumption of their entire portfolio by 39 percent annually, resulting in $2.2 million in annual utility cost savings and 38 percent reduction in annual GHG reductions.
