Expanding trails to a world of adventure
In St. Cloud, Minnesota, beautiful vistas await those who venture along the newest segment of the Beaver Island Trail. The 0.35-mile-long trail extension begins with the existing Beaver Island Trail behind the River’s Edge Convention Center before dropping down toward the river. A grand plaza with stairs to the street level, rock gabion walls, benches, granite paving, lighting, and plantings thematically connect the trail to the convention center and downtown streets. Extensive retaining walls were installed along the steep-sloped route.
When conditions proved too steep and unstable, engineers moved the trail onto a series of 18 piers over the mighty Mississippi, delivering an unparalleled experience for cyclists and pedestrians. Before reaching a scenic overlook and climbing back up the bluff, the trail passes under a railroad bridge.
The trail extension not only offers unique experience for trail enthusiasts, it provides an important connection with key access points in the downtown area, spurring traffic and activity.
