Maintaining an iconic 130-year-old structure while breathing new life into the surrounding community

With their planned commercial office space on 80 West Broadway, Shorenstein Realty Services saw the opportunity to breathe new life into the historic and cherished Amrheins Restaurant, which has operated in South Boston since 1890. Preserving this important building was vital to maintaining the character of the community. Shorenstein Realty Services needed a partner who would respect this legacy corner business while also delivering on a modern vision for the site. They reached out to our team to help.

We provided architectural and interior design services for a new four-story, mixed-use building that will be occupied on its ground level by Amrheins’s existing brownstone building. Our design for the architectural form of the new construction steps back at the corner, allowing this historic restaurant to take center stage.

Taking inspiration from Amrheim’s hand carved bar, wood elements play a prominent role throughout our design. Wood-grained window frames sit at select angles to both maximize sunlight during low sun seasons while also providing sun shading to intense late-afternoon sun, and the exterior façade hints at the cross-laminated timber structure throughout the interior.

When complete, this project will seek LEED Gold certification and feature a photovoltaic array, giving 80 West Broadway a sustainable future while also preserving its past.
