Unlocking additional funds for active travel improvements
In East Lothian, Council secured funding called Places for Everyone (PfE) from a local organization, Sustrans, to commission an active travel study. The goal? To identify options to address road safety concerns and transport related issues, expressed by locals, that may be ‘actual’ or ‘perceived’ barriers to encouraging sustainable travel.
The studies, two of which focussed on issues around schools, examined the existing walking and cycling infrastructure. It identified barriers, weaknesses and opportunities while considering the impact of significant planned developments in and around the study areas.
Our team developed action plans that were informed by extensive public and stakeholder engagement and were successfully used by the Council to secure additional funding to take forward stages two and four of the PfE process to produce technical designs. These include the signalisation of a junction, creation of new shared footpath and traffic calming measures. They also considered behaviour change, equality and how to monitor and evaluate the success of interventions.
