Nan-Kan River Water Purification Facility Consulting and Design

In recent years Taoyuan City has made significant progress in improving river water quality. However, some sections still struggle with high ammonia nitrogen levels, impacting dissolved oxygen and the ecosystem. To address this, the Taoyuan City Government designated Nan-Kan River, known as the "mother river" of Greater Taoyuan, as a demonstration site for ammonia nitrogen reduction, aiming to enhance water quality and restore the river's vitality. They engaged us to help.

Working with government agencies and private enterprises, we helped the City secure land donations from a local university for the facility. In our capacity as the technical consultant, we oversaw design construction supervision, quality management, and ecological assessments. Our team conducted relevant surveys, planned and designed primary and auxiliary facilities, and developed detailed sustainable designs.

Responding to urban constraints and limited land availability, we crafted nature-based solutions for on-site treatment methods—such as using the contact oxygen process for water purification that mimics natural aquatic environments. Treated water is then returned to the river, aiding its self-purification and ecological recovery. This improves conditions for local fish species, such as guppies (Poecilia reticulata), tilapia, and striped snakeheads (Channa striata), while paving the way for the return of more diverse aquatic life as water quality continues to improve.

Additionally, to restore local biodiversity, the project involved the replanting of native trees post-construction. These efforts compensate for removed trees and provide habitats and food sources for wildlife, such as the crested goshawk, besra sparrowhawk, black-winged kite, Taipei treefrogs, and various insects.

With this sustainably designed water purification facility, Taoyuan City has a path forward to restoring the Nan-Kan river’s water quality and vitality with a significantly enhanced environment, both on land and in the water.
