Experience in design and supervision of mine tailings dam construction for Gold Fields’ Cerro Corona Mine
Gold Fields, one of the world’s largest gold producers, approached our team in 2008 to assist with an arduous challenge in a remote location. Miles away from the nearest town and accessible by only two roads, our team helped to design and supervise the construction of its tailings dam, waste dumps and other associated infrastructure of the Cerro Corona Gold Mine in Northern Peru. Situated in the highest part of the Western Cordillera of the Andes Mountains, Cerro Corona would be expected to produce over 90 million tons of ore spanning a 15-year mine life.
The extraction of gold ore is daunting, and our team was hired for our expertise related to tailings dam, dumps, hydrogeological characterization and environmental permits.
During this project, we forged a unique relationship with Gold Fields based on trust and shared goals. We’re currently providing quality control assurance services and construction management of the tailings dam. When completed, Cerro Corona will be a single-surface mine producing at an average grade of 1.0 gram per ton of gold.
