Improving power supply to Edmonton’s Downtown core
Working closely with EPCOR, we created a remarkably compact design fit into the small footprint available at the Victoria Terminal Substation. We designed the 240 kV (kilovolt) to 72 kV at the Victoria Terminal Substation by providing detailed design, project management, construction management, and on-site support.
The existing 72 kV six breaker radial bus was upgraded to a nine-breaker ring bus and a new 240 kV / 72 kV 450 MVA transformer was added to the substation. Two oil-filled 72 kV lines were relocated and a new 240 kV XLPE underground cable was terminated in the substation. Space underground was limited, so the transformer was put on a deep, rather than wide, oil containment pad. The containment pit has 300 mm of gravel suspended above on a grate. The new 450 MVA power transformer is among one of the largest in the city. Special transportation arrangements had to be made to get the 284 metric tonne transformer installed on its pad. This included moving the transformer while roads were frozen, and lifting telephone cables so the transformer could fit under them.
Finally, an attractive architectural wall was designed for an aesthetically pleasing fit into the existing surroundings, suppressing the transformer hum to low levels.
