Keeping up with the demands of a growing metropolis
St. John’s is Newfoundland and Labrador’s largest and fastest growing urban center. To keep up with this growth and the increasing number of commuting customers Metrobus decided it was time for a larger and updated facility. Stantec’s architectural group led the interior design and the mechanical and electrical engineering team through an integrated design process for the new terminal.
The design team worked closely with Metrobus to create an energy conscious space that embodied the client’s focus on green transit. The building was designed to LEED certification standards and features rainwater harvesting technology for the bus wash systems, a geothermal heat pump that capitalizes on the earth’s natural energy, high recycled content building materials and more. Stantec was awarded the regional and national 2013 BOMA Pinnacle Award for Innovation in recognition of their creative application of these new technologies.
Accommodating up to 60 buses and hosting a repair garage, heated indoor storage garage, maintenance and repair space with skylights to maximize natural daylight, and areas for the local public transportation commission, allows Metrobus to grow over time. As an added touch, designers developed a color palette inspired from the Metrobus logo to incorporate the client’s strong brand history into its new facility.
