Springbank Dam Decommissioning
For the decommissioning of the Springbank Dam project, the City of London set out to remove the four non-functional hydraulically controlled steel gates. Specifically, all mechanical components were decommissioned and removed, along with the control building and superstructure, while the piers and foundation were left in place.
Our team was involved with both the planning and execution of the decommissioning effort including the design, engineering, and contract administration aspects. We also provided environmental assessment and restoration planning services. As part of the restoration efforts, we oversaw the transformation of approximately 200 metres (656 feet) of the streambank into a more natural habitat, further supporting the long-term health and sustainability of the local ecosystem.
Through this decommissioning effort, the City aimed to improve the stability of the remaining dam structure and enhance passage for fish through the decommissioned structure. The project also restored the natural shoreline downstream of the former dam, providing benefits to the fish, turtle, and freshwater mussel species that inhabited the area.
