Setting the tone at the northern entrance to Canada’s largest national Urban Park
Parks Canada retained Stantec to help set visitors’ first impression upon entering Rouge National Urban Park. We worked with Parks Canada to develop an overall theme and style that was appropriate and reflective of the overall site.
Two separate welcome areas were designed and constructed. Elements within these areas include picnic shelters, washrooms, trails, lighting, elevated viewing points, open spaces, signage as well as an outdoor covered stage. The design goal was to show an appreciation for the agriculture roots of the area and contextually fit in within the landscape. The design approach focused on sustainability, respect of the site’s natural and cultural heritage and looking to the future. The design elements focused on locally sourced plant materials, solar-powered site lighting, use board and baton siding on the structures reflective of the rural context, a unique stage area with a barn-like design style for open air concerts and educational gatherings, and protection of the natural vegetation and archaeological features.
Now complete, the park has an entrance that sets the stage for your experience and a foundation for future phases build off.
