Rogers Place

Edmonton’s downtown district—despite being set in the City’s geographical center—was not a beautiful, entertaining, or safe place to be. For years, it was dislocated from people and businesses alike. Until the plans for the ICE District. The ICE district is a master plan to get Edmontonians back downtown, headlining Rogers Place as a catalyst for urban development. Powered by a world-class design by HOK, Rogers Place is home to the Oilers and the new heart of Edmonton.

As part of the ICE District project, which includes our new global headquarters, Rogers Place will house the NHL’s best hockey player, facilitate concerts, other sports, and community events. The challenge was directly connecting the arena to the ICE district. The solution? A grand, multi-purpose entryway that runs from the arena gates, over and across 104 Avenue, and down into the ICE district’s “Winter Garden”. Our design unified the city center to provide safe passage to events and a hub for gameday celebrations.

Downtown Edmonton is an integral part of the city’s cultural framework, and the ICE District now contributes to the revitalization and transformation of Edmonton’s commercial entertainment sector. To capitalize on the opportunity, we held community engagement sessions to encourage participation and feedback from the public. Completed in 2016, Sport Management Magazine has named Rogers Place as one of the best NHL arenas.

The Edmonton Oilers qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the inaugural season in their new home, hosting the first post-season game in Edmonton for over a decade.
