Proposing flexible solutions and getting the right results
We’ve been called to consult on over 20 complex and very remote sites in the north including mine closure and reclamation projects for Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada.
Awarded by Public Works and Government Services Canada in 2012, the agreement was put in place as a contracting mechanism to allow Federal Departments to efficiently access top consultants for remote northern work. We have been actively involved in the closure of the Giant Mine, among others. With offices in Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, and many years of northern work experience, Stantec knows the many risks that need to be addressed. A series of detailed work protocols and a quality plan were designed for the agreement based on our ISO9001:2008 standards, with weekly reviews implemented. We’ve modified standard work procedures, like using portable drills instead of large rigs, to better manage the conditions. Aboriginal opportunity plans for each call up also ensure that local workers and businesses in the community get involved.
In some cases, we had to propose flexible solutions and modify the scope of work to provide the “best bang for the buck” with available budgets – but we’ve succeeded. Our deliverables have been on time, on budget, and in line with objectives, despite the many complexities that working in the remote north can bring.
