Metro Line NW Extension

An accessible, urban-style addition to Edmonton’s Metro Line

  • Edmonton, Alberta

    Edmonton, Alberta

This line will extend from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) to the north end of the city

The City of Edmonton’s plan is to balance long-term transportation needs with a commitment to create compact, integrated, accessible, and green communities. To do that, they set out to create an 11-kilometre extension of their Metro Line, including a 300-metre, cable-stayed bridge that will cross over a CN yard, seven at-grade and two grade-separated stations, and two grade separations between the LRT and arterial roadways.

With our previous experience on the City’s LRT lines, we were selected to develop a design plan made up of two phases: a procurement package (design build) for a 1.6-kilometre track, two stations, a light rail vehicle storage facility, and the preliminary design. One challenging part of the project has been engaging all stakeholders—but we’re making sure to address all opinions and goals. With an urban-style metro line, we’ve also tried to minimize the impact on the community, utilities, and surrounding properties within the area.

As project engineering is almost complete, approximately 100,000 daily passengers will soon experience increased accessibility through an urban style, multi-modal, high-platform transit system to connect them with the growing Edmonton downtown core.
