Helping Canada meet the demand for responsibly sourced critical minerals

Looking to help Canada and Ontario meet the demand for responsibly sourced critical minerals, Generation PGM Inc.’s Marathon Palladium Project has passed an important regulatory milestone. The project, a mine and milling operation, covers approximately 220 square kilometres (85 square miles) and will employ up to 1,000 workers during construction and 375 workers when operational.

Our team led and coordinated preparation of the environmental impact statement (EIS) addendum and various technical reports as part of a collaboration with Generation PGM and other consultants. Our specialists completed technical assessments for the EIS addendum, responded to information requests from the joint review panel, and acted as expert witnesses during the public hearing held by the panel. We also provided technical expertise in the areas of hydrology, hydrogeology, air quality, greenhouse gases, acoustics, and socioeconomics, and supported engagement with agencies and Indigenous communities.

The panel’s public review process included 10 months of written filings and a public hearing consisting of 19 oral hearing days—it was among the largest regulatory hearings of 2022. To secure the panel’s approval, Generation PGM and our team collaborated with specialists from Ecometrix, Knight-Piésold, Northern Bioscience, and WSP, with legal support from Cassels.

Going forward, Generation PGM is working to obtain the necessary permits for construction and operation of the mine.
