Ensuring standards of safety and functionality are met on this ambitious undertaking

When Canaport LNG had a unique construction challenge requiring structural inspection activities 24 hours a day for 28 straight days, Stantec pulled together resources to meet the project’s quality and safety requirements.

The first LNG facility in Canada required Stantec’s expertise in civil and structural inspection for three 165,000 cubic meter cryogenic reinforced and post tensioned concrete tanks. Measuring 80 meters in diameter and 45 meters in height, the tanks required specific knowledge of slip forming construction activities.

During the slip forming process concrete is poured into the moving 600 millimeter wide by 502 meter long form at a rate of 100 millimeters per hour. Cryogenic reinforcing steel, vertical and horizontal post tensioning tubes, and embedded plates are also installed during the slip forming process.

The overall civil works including firewater, sanitary, potable water, retaining wall activities and all reinforced concrete foundations were inspected by our field services personnel. Inspections services also related to all structural steel platforms, buildings and pipe racks.

The Canaport LNG facility was a highly unique facility with many complex structures assembled on a very large scale and required Stantec’s particular technical experience to accomplish all of the client’s project goals over a three year period.
