Working with the community to open a new era of possibility

In the heart of the Preston/Carling neighborhood, the National Resources Canada complex has played an important role in Ottawa’s history. Seven structures were built on the site between 1911 and 1952 and were used for research and testing in mining and metallurgy, and other natural resources.

We were engaged by Canada Lands Company to develop a master plan to bring new life to the site. Our goal for the project was to adopt a creative approach to create a plan that would benefit the current and future community. Inspired by this commitment, the team aimed to deliver a master plan that focused on community engagement, placemaking, and prioritizing heritage and public realm. The community was engaged early and often, allowing the team to develop a plan that would most benefit them. This, together with placemaking, guided the design and proved key to winning community support.

The Booth Street District will blend significant heritage structures and 21st-centruy buildings to showcase Ottawa’s distinctive blend of past, present, and future, and opens a new era of possibilities for the public realm. The final plan will create a place to live, work and play for the community.
