Improving regional interconnection through safer and more sustainable road networks
The transport sector is critical to Ghana’s ongoing industrialization and to West Africa’s economic integration. While Ghana has made significant progress in extending local road networks, development is hampered by limited infrastructure funding and management capacity.
Since 2021, the European Union (EU) has been working with ministries and stakeholders in Ghana to improve the sustainability and security of road and transport networks in the country. This initiative is one of the components of the EU’s Regional Transport Governance project for West Africa.
On behalf of the European Commission, we provide advice and help develop the local skills, knowledge, and resources needed to improve road maintenance, transport planning and governance, and regional mobility. We assess sector needs, simplify administrative and technical processes, and organize trainings for administrators and service providers.
To date, the initiative has resulted in a driver’s guide for truck operators, a series of sensitization workshops on road and transport regulations, and the development of a five-year road maintenance plan.
