Star of the South

A project that could supply a significant amount of Victoria’s electrical needs.

    Gippsland, Victoria

Australia’s first offshore wind project

In the Gippsland community in the southeastern part of Victoria is the Star of the South: Australia’s most advanced offshore wind project. Proposed to be located off Gippsland’s south coast and supply up to 20 percent of Victoria’s electricity needs, it’s set to create hundreds of job opportunities and investment into the community.

Prior to the key infrastructural, supply and operational components of the project taking place, our coastal team was brought in to provide an assessment of the potential environmental impact of the project on coastal landforms. This included a review of the meteorological and oceanographic (metocean) data collected for the project and technical advice to the project team to complement modelling of waves and hydrodynamics of the area.

Upon completion, this project has the potential to generate up to 2.2 gigawatts of new capacity—powering around 1.2 million homes across the state.
