Boosting cycling in Port Melbourne to connect the local community, benefiting both health and the environment

The City of Port Phillip’s council has identified boosting bike riding as a focus area in their Integrated Transport Strategy 2018-28. Cycling is a healthy, efficient, low-cost, and convenient way to travel, and encouraging people to bike more is good for both general health and the environment. To kick things off, they engaged our team to carry out initial assessments on four cycle corridor options.

Following the assessment, the council selected Garden City Reserve for the next stage of design. We developed three design options for the bi-directional cycleway and an assessment matrix to evaluate and compare them. This assessment tool enabled council to understand which option provided the best outcomes for walking and cycling and the best value for money. Their chosen design linked Garden City Reserve to the Sandridge and Bay Trail share path networks.

Since the completion of construction in 2021, the cycleway has improved safety for all users and connected the Port Philip community to Garden City Reserve and popular destinations in the area. This was the first successful step toward a larger goal of boosting active travel in Melbourne.
