Uterne Solar Farm is recognisable throughout Australia from the “Carbon Tax" television campaign and other promotional materials
Commissioned by SunPower Pty Ltd, Uterne Solar Farm was initiated as part of the Solar Cities program and would feature more than 3,000 solar panels mounted on a ground-mounted solar tracking system. Solar Cities provides federal government sponsorship of iconic solar projects in each Australian state, offering grants for development.
Stantec was engaged to support SunPower and provided services including negotiation with manufacturers for the supply of two 500-kilowatt inverters through to earthing and connection to the NT Power and Water Corporation network. Obtaining grid connection approval from the power supply authority was uncharted territory, as this project occurred in the early days of renewables connecting into the power grid in Australia. The scale of the solar array meant our design needed to utilize high voltage direct current elements including sourcing cables, equipment, and materials to ensure safe standards.
Due to its dry environment and expansive land areas, Australia offers advantages for solar production as a method to support reduced carbon dioxide emissions. Uterne Solar Farm is now the nation’s biggest solar power station and supplies one percent of the Alice Springs community’s annual energy.
