An iconic solar PV system is designed to reflect an already sustainable landmark headquarters

The RAC Western Australia (WA) headquarters on Wellington Street in Perth was designed as a landmark building. One of RAC’s requirements was the implementation of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system to integrate with network power, optimising the use of solar energy on site.

Our electrical engineering team was engaged to design and implement the solar PV system, with the challenge being to meet the client’s energy and sustainability requirements while maximising their return on investment. Our design focused on identifying the ‘sweet spot’ for maximum energy production while working within available roof space and aligning with the headquarters’ power demands. With the connection of a large solar system into the existing electrical network, the project’s design and staging had to be strategically assembled to minimise the risk of losing supply. Although a shut-down could not be avoided in its entirety, minimal down time was achieved allowing alternative supply systems to keep the building’s critical loads serviced.

Working seamlessly with the network to service the building, the resulting PV system produces 168,500 kWh of electricity per year and includes controls to ensure the solar power is completely used on site.
