Working within the constraints of an existing building, we mitigated risks to successfully expand critical airport services
Terminal 1 at Perth Airport includes the arrivals area which needed expansion to accommodate increasing numbers of passengers and growing sizes of aircraft. The expansion would also incorporate the activities of Border Force and Quarantine personnel, sniffer dog housing, and allow for simple docking of current and future aircraft.
Stantec was the principal engineering consultant for the forward works (Stage 1), responsible for civil, structural, and building services engineering. The project straddled both airside and landside zones, and we worked proactively to mitigate impact on live airport operations. It was identified that there was a high risk of additional subsurface utilities not currently shown in the airport database. We mitigated this by directing targeted positive identification of services and development of alternative designs to reduce design, cost, and constructability impacts. Some of the design solutions included preventing additional load being applied to critical infrastructure and reducing the requirement for service relocation.
Throughout the project, we worked collaboratively with the project delivery team, PAPL, and stakeholders to meet the time and construction constraints. The expanded arrivals facilities now help streamline the flow of passengers and aircraft at Perth Airport.
