A fast-tracked shopping centre design program while the existing centre remains open requires extra liaising and collaboration
The Baldivis Shopping Centre expansion was a key strategic development by Stockland to quadruple the centre’s net lettable area to include a range of major retail outlets as well as close to 100 specialty stores, 1,400 parking spaces, and a restaurant terrace.
Our team was engaged to provide structural and civil engineering, with a key focus on the development of an open-plan food court located at the front of the centre which will be operational outside of normal shopping hours. The operational function of the existing centre during the works was one of the highest drivers as one of the anchor tenants had the company’s highest turnover in Western Australia (WA). A main high-pressure gas pipeline at the rear of the lot also impacted design methods as well as construction sequence. The program was fast tracked for completion in 12 months from commencement to handover. This was achieved with extra effort, liaison, and collaboration between all parties concerned—the developer, tenants, contractors, and consultants.
The development doubled the shopping facility for the surrounding suburbs and was fully-utilised upon opening. Today it remains one of the most highly-used suburban shopping centres in Perth.
