Improving transport movements for Slough trading estate and the wider community
Slough Trading Estate is Europe’s largest trading estate, in single ownership, and makes a considerable contribution the economy of south east England. Our team was appointed to improve the existing bridge that connects the estate to the surrounding area.
The original bridge suffered from sub-standard horizontal and vertical design. Its narrow width only permitted alternate flow of traffic via signal control and afforded very poor forward visibility. In addition, the bridge provided no formal footway or cycle provision. Comprehensive environmental and transport assessment was produced by us to successfully deliver the proposals of a brand-new bridge adjacent to the old through planning with multiple authorities and stakeholders.
The concept, agreement in principle (AiP), and detailed design of the new bridge was engineered by us on behalf of the contractor, Osborne, and successfully gained agreement with Network Rail and Slough Borough Council. The new bridge can now accommodate higher levels of traffic and heavy goods vehicles while providing safe passage for pedestrians and cyclists by preserving the original heritage bridge as a separate cycleway. The improvement to a key transport bottleneck, at the heart of Slough’s economy, will stimulate growth and investment in the region and provide better access between areas to the north and south of the Great Western Rail.
