Waterbury Village Parking Study

Coping with an economic rebound following tropical storm Irene

  • Waterbury, Vermont

    Waterbury, Vermont

The rebuilding process that began after tropical storm Irene flooded Waterbury has been very successful, perhaps too successful.

With rebuilding activities and an economic surge following tropical storm Irene, residents and business owners in Waterbury, Vermont, had an interesting challenge. What if there wasn’t enough parking to support the vibrant village center? We were selected to work with Waterbury’s volunteer Parking Committee to assess conditions and make recommendations.

With guidance from Stantec, the Committee collected field data for over 350 parking spaces and documented current land use conditions. We compiled and analyzed the data to draw conclusions regarding existing parking utilization for various times of day and days of week.

By helping formulate proposals to best manage the existing parking supply, we helped the Village of Waterbury avoid the high cost of acquiring land and building new parking lots.
