Relieving congestion and improving the flow of traffic
Stretching from Waverly Road to Baskerville Drive in Georgetown County, the US 17 Median was experiencing an average of 8 collisions per month—something needed to change. That’s where we stepped in.
With safety top of mind, we provided roadway design and traffic engineering services. We designed a raised median, with appropriate median breaks for traffic flow, and installed two new signals that coordinated with the two existing signals on the corridor. Our team also provided Georgetown County with a drainage analysis of 10 drainage basins along US 17, totaling 527 acres in size. Based on study results, we designed drainage crossline and downstream improvements to solve drainage issues along the corridor. Construction of the drainage improvements was performed in conjunction with the US 17 median improvements, a separate SCDOT project also designed by Stantec.
We engaged the public and worked with SCDOT and local stakeholders so that informed decisions could be made about the project’s implementation. Once completed, the project reduced turning movement conflicts, enhanced aesthetics, and improved traffic flow along US 17.
