Providing the Town of Hartford with damage assessments and documentation after Irene

When Tropical Storm Irene entered Vermont, the flooding caused an estimated $800 million in damage, and some 2,400 road segments and 330 bridges were destroyed or damaged.

Within days, we provided the Town of Hartford with damage assessments, documentation, and emergency repairs for a 400 foot railroad bridge crossing where a supporting pier had been undermined and displaced, disrupting railway operations. We worked long hours to design temporary supports ahead of the construction and later designed the permanent pier replacement.

We also designed temporary replacement bridges for Route 73 in Rochester and Route 30 in Jamaica. We worked over a weekend to design a major culvert replacement, so that repairs could be combined with the bridge replacement. We also fielded emergency response teams at two incident command centers and worked directly with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in Rutland County to collect data and create project worksheets. Over six weeks, we met with 22 applicants and provided field assessment and documentation for over 130 project worksheets.
