State University of New York Potsdam - Facilities Master Plan

When the State University of New York (SUNY) Potsdam’s leaders were convinced that the campus was at capacity and the only way to increase student enrollment was to expand the site, we completed a space utilization study and facility master plan that not only demonstrated that there was capacity enough for the future but also created a unique campus identity.

Our analysis of buildings, site conditions, and space utilization patterns showed that the problem was scheduling and not space. We determined that the population could be increased from 5,000 to 7,000 students without adding new buildings.

To deliver the message to prospective students that SUNY Potsdam is the art community of the SUNY system, focusing on music and performing arts, we installed banners, wayfinding, and signage. Our team also moved art galleries and music rehearsal rooms to locations that felt more accessible 24/7. The campus culture now reflects the interests of its students.

The final plan is supported by a unique, interactive database that will be used by the client to manage deferred maintenance and planned projects for many years. Through this work, we helped the university save $20 million by making better use of its current assets. It’s about optimizing physical space as opposed to maximizing it.
