Designing a replacement while maintaining the character of a nationally registered historic place
Pennsylvania Route 32 is a scenic two-lane highway that runs along the side of the Delaware River in Bucks County, PA. As a significant contributing element to the Point Pleasant Historic District, several public coordination meetings—as well as execution of a memorandum of agreement to mitigate adverse effects to the historic district during construction—were required before a replacement bridge could be employed.
To maintain the traffic flow on Route 32, we employed a temporary bridge that was built immediately upstream from the existing structure. Goals to replace the structurally deficient bridge included a hydraulic opening that induces favorable upstream and downstream 100-year flood flow conditions without impacting existing floodplains as well as the design of a two-span arch bridge which would resemble the existing one.
The replacement bridge is adorned with a precast concrete stone finish on the support abutments and wing walls to mimic the aesthetics of its predecessor. It is 160 feet long and 37 feet wide with two 11-foot travel lanes, a six-foot-wide sidewalk adjacent to the northbound travel lane, and three-foot shoulders.
