McClellan Air Force Base SCR Project, Sacramento Municipal Utility District

Helping to satisfy a critical demand for electricity in California

Increasing power capacity to accommodate 75 megawatts of production

The power plant at the McClellan air force base is a nominal 75 MW simple cycle combustion turbine facility that has been in operation since 1986. Owned and operated by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), the McClellan plant produced 50 megawatts of electricity for the surrounding Californian community. When SMUD wanted to upgrade the existing power plant to accommodate 75 megawatts, they called on our experienced team of power engineers to assist with the rehabilitation.

Our scope included all engineering and design activities necessary for a successful plant upgrade, which involved modifications to the existing turbine and the addition of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit designed for operation at greater than 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. We also helped with the design and installation of an inlet cooling system, a continuous emissions monitoring system, and an integrated controls system.

Commercial power production was achieved ahead of schedule, effectively-helping to satisfy a critical demand for electricity in California.
