An atmosphere designed for comfort and healing, but also for play
One of several distinct patient care environments at the new Riverton Hospital, the Primary Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) is comprised of a three-level, 78,000 square feet, specialty pediatric center with clinics, physician offices, and surgery facilities.
Although the different environments of the Riverton Hospital—Ambulatory Care, Acute Care, and Primary Children’s Medical Center—are physically unified into a single building structure, unique identities have been established through the building design. A campus-like setting has been created for the overall facility through a compatible architectural language, with similar materials and details, and with buildings organized around shared landscape features and circulation paths. On the inside, the design team worked to craft a place of warmth, character and playfulness—an environment that would appeal to a young woman while also delighting and engaging her children. Employing soft, organic forms (archways, undulating porticos, circular cut-outs, curved walls) and a soothing, but fresh, palette (tangerine, chartreuse, lavender and gray), the space announces itself as a cool, non-threatening place to celebrate health and wellness. In the pediatric care areas, themed reception and waiting spaces celebrating sea, land, and sky replete with murals, graphic directional cues etched into the flooring, and whimsical details such as “peek-a-boo” windows to help create a familiar and playful experience for kids.
