Developing an energy source built to handle the environment that surrounds it
Summers in Pakistan are hot—because of this, electricity shortages are common. To help avoid power shortages, a privately developed power production company set out to generate 102 megawatts of clean, renewable hydropower.
The original project layout that the project owner wanted to use would have suffered severe problems with siltation in a very few years—this would have required relocating of over 100 households and would nearly dried up about seven kilometers (km) of river habitat. To answer this, we revised the project location and layout, eliminating resettlement and the stretch of dried up river, and addressed sedimentation in a way that will permit long-term, reliable operation. We have also effectively reviewed about 4,400 EPC contractor submittals so that the work is done in compliance with the project requirements, and we are monitoring the construction of the remaining work.
Upon completion, this project will help to alleviate brownouts and rolling blackouts, allowing the industry to operate more continuously and helping to improve the economy. The result? Pakistan will have reliable, sustainable energy for generations to come.
