Ensuring a reliable water supply while promoting the community’s goal of improving recreational opportunities
Stantec succeeded in balancing several factors to provide an environmentally sensitive design and improve the biological connectivity and fish passage on the Truckee River. The project replaced an antiquated diversion weir constructed of unconsolidated rock and rubble with a new diversion and screened intake. The design was integrated with the flood control efforts of the USACE, provides a safe boat passage, and resulted in an aesthetically pleasing appearance with a low visual impact.
The weir design required analysis of diversion rates and methods, river access and easements, diversion aesthetics, plant biology assessments, reestablishment of the biological connectivity within the river system, floodplain analysis, permitting requirements, fish passage and screening, and boating and recreational safety. The site analysis included an investigation of potential diversion sites within the Reno/Sparks metropolitan area, including combination with other existing diversions, a feasibility analysis of each site, and cost analysis for the viable alternatives.
Public workshops were held throughout the process to solicit input and garner acceptance of the diversion from the public. The work area had to be dewatered for construction, with activity completed within a six-month window.
