Developing a central business district to reflect remarkable economic growth in Fairburn
The City of Fairburn has recently experienced remarkable economic growth. Fairburn, located 25 minutes from Atlanta, has a robust historic downtown and central business district that includes several buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The city wanted to pay homage to their history by enhancing their downtown district.
Our team is developing a comprehensive streetscape design that incorporates complete street concepts and transportation alternatives to improve the appearance, safety, and mobility of Fairburn’s downtown corridor. The project’s first phase included public outreach using a charrette-based design process that walked the community through landscape hardscape options including street trees, lighting, and plazas. We also provided design options for gateways, roundabouts, drainage, active meeting nodes, greenway connections, sidewalks, parking, and placemaking elements.
Our solution recommends transforming a roadway underpass into a pedestrian tunnel, which will expand plaza space to highlight Broad Street’s arched layout. This highlighted curve creates a deflected vista downtown, giving us an opportunity to create memorable and attractive views for people approaching downtown from both directions. We incorporated rain gardens and permeable pavers to address water quality and stormwater runoff, new street trees, and improved intersections crossings for cars and people.
