Long-range community planning, historic buildings, and natural amenities play key roles in project’s success
Beginning in 2018, Cañon City and a coalition, which included Fremont County and the City of Florence, engaged us to assist with implementing a three-year, $600,000 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Brownfield Assessment Grant for sites that resulted from over 150 years of oil and mineral extraction activities. Funding lasted only two-and-a-half years, leaving a waiting list for additional properties.
In 2021, the City hired us again, this time to help with a five-year, $800,000 multipurpose brownfield grant to redevelop riverfront property along the Arkansas River, which the City had been locked out of for a century, as well as underutilized and contaminated properties in historic downtown.
To date, our work has included multiple Phase I and II environmental site assessments, risk-based monitoring surveys for asbestos and lead-based paint, area-wide plans, and one site cleanup (asbestos abatement). Two additional cleanups are schedule to occur during 2023.
These grants and other funding are helping the City reclaim historic sites, improve economic opportunities, and improve the health and safety of the surrounding communities.
